The Storm selected Chelsea Newton in the Dispersal Draft of former Sacramento Monarchs players on Dec. 14, 2009, but she made the decision to retire shortly into 2010 training camp. Newton spent four of the five seasons of her WNBA career with the Monarchs, who drafted her in the second round of the 2005 WNBA Draft out of Rutgers. Known as a defensive stopper on the perimeter, Newton earned a starting position as a rookie and helped lead Sacramento to the WNBA championship. Selected by Chicago in the 2005 Expansion Draft, Newton spent one year with the Sky before being traded back to the Monarchs.
