Connecticut Sun Announce 2011 Schedule
UNCASVILLE, Conn. (December 22, 2010) — The Connecticut Sun opens its ninth season at Mohegan Sun Arena with a 7 p.m. game against the Washington Mystics on June 4th.
Six of Connecticut’s first seven games will be against Eastern Conference opponents, and five of its first nine are at home, including an ESPN-televised matchup with Candace Parker and the Los Angeles Sparks at 8 p.m. on June 28th, and a meeting with the defending WNBA champion Seattle Storm at 7:30 p.m. on July 1st.
Other highlights include home games with Diana Taurasi and the Phoenix Mercury on August 26th at 7:30 p.m., and Lindsay Whalen and the Minnesota Lynx on August 16th at 7:30 p.m.
The Sun face Eastern Conference playoff contenders the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever five times each in 2011, and close out the regular season with a home game September 11th against the New York Liberty. Of Connecticut’s 17 home games, 11 will be contested on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Connecticut will play just one back-to-back next season.
"For our fans and for the team, this is a great schedule,” Connecticut Sun Vice President and General Manager Chris Sienko said. “We only have one back-to-back, our trips out West are bunched together and the timing of games we play at Mohegan Sun Arena is good with 11 weekend games. Overall, we couldn't have asked for anything better, especially with how tough the Eastern Conference will be again in 2011.”
The Sun will be anchored in the middle by 2010 WNBA Rookie of the Year Tina Charles, who set league records for rebounds and double-doubles on the way to one of the most impressive professional debuts in league history. Former UConn stars Renee Montgomery and Asjha Jones will also be back along with veteran point guard Kara Lawson and 2010 All-Rookie selection Kelsey Griffin as the Sun pursue their seventh trip to the WNBA playoffs.
